The Town Manager is charged with the responsibility for a smoothly functioning government on a daily basis. This responsibility and authority is conferred upon him by the Town of Warrenton's Charter and by the Town's governing body. The Town Manager is a charter-appointed position which is directly accountable to the Council for the day-to-day operations of the Town. The functions the Manager carries out encompass the coordination of the departments within the Town of Warrenton, which collectively provide numerous services to the Town's citizens. These service providers include the departments of Economic Development, Finance and Human Services, Police, Planning and Zoning, Public Works and Public Utilities. Additionally, the Town Manager serves as the legislative liaison for the Council, develops the Town's annual budget, prepares monthly Council agenda and other communications for use and consideration by the Town Council. The Manager also provides for effective communication with other agencies of government at the local, state and federal level, which are crucial tasks undertaken in conducting the Town's business. The development of options for Council's consideration and resolving problems relative to the Town's provision of services to its nearly 7,000 citizens are also among the top priorities of the Town Manager's office.
Mr. McLawhon comes to Warrenton with a considerable amount of municipal government experience and a broad background. In service to the United States Marine Corps, he attended the Legal Services School at Camp Pendleton and ultimately attained the rank of sergeant, prior to completing his active service. After receiving his honorable discharge, Mr. McLawhon next began the pursuit of his college education. He now holds several degrees. These degrees include an Associate in Arts Degree, with a major in liberal arts, an Associate in Science Degree, with a major in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a concentration in political science. All three degrees were completed with a Suma Cum Laude designation and entail several awards. Over the years, Mr. McLawhon's prior municipal management experiences have included managing three towns in Virginia and one in the State of Maryland. His service within the Commonwealth also includes a position as an assistant to a County Administrator and employment within the State's Comptroller's Office. The Town Manager's office is directly staffed by the Manager and an executive secretary who also serves as Town Recorder. |
